| Artist's
statement for Unidentified, images by Patrick V. Brown |
The
images from the body of work Unidentified are made in locations where
national identities are formulated and where spectatorship and a mutual
gaze are shared. |
| In regard to the formulation of identity; culturally humanity tends towards mass spectatorship whether in a stadium, auditorium or in places containing various ancient and contemporary cultural ruins. While temporarily inhabiting these places of intersection, beings choose to either emphasize or transcend nationalistic identities and behaviors. We select instead a manner of negotiated use of space and mutuality of our public experience. |
| Lucy Lippard addresses this concept in the text, On the Beaten Path. Lippard refers to the question posed by Lawrence Durrell in reference to landscape, |
"I
am watching you-are you watching yourself in me?" |
| In creating the images of Unidentified, I invite a more collaborative dialogue with the viewer. Even while I know the specific genesis of the image, the viewer will experience a blurred image much differently than an image that is sharply focused. Of the viewer I ask for their patience and a momentary pause, a hesitation towards a respect for their perception. |
| As an exchange the viewer's understanding of the work is derived from what they see in the work, without being visually directed to the image's derivation or didactic intention. Through the obscured imagery perhaps a viewer's experience of the Unidentified becomes engaging, interpretive and on some levels a private rev-elation. | ||||||||
